Winter Propane Safety Tips

November 19, 2020

Now is the time to prepare for upcoming winter weather. Here are five winter propane safety tips to keep in mind as we enter the season for snow and ice.

Be Prepared

If you are a will-call customer, the first thing you need to do in advance of a storm is check your propane supply. MFA Oil recommends customers call to schedule a delivery when tank levels are between 30% to 20%. If you are unsure how to read your propane tank’s gauge, check out this short video.

Conserve Energy

Extreme winter storms can sometimes last several days and may make roads impassable for propane delivery. You can conserve your propane supply by setting your thermostat as low as is comfortable and closing off any rooms that don’t need to be heated.

If You Smell Gas, Act Quickly

Propane has a strong, unpleasant smell like rotten eggs, a skunk’s spray, or a dead animal. Propane manufacturers add the smell deliberately to help you to a propane leak. If you smell any of these odors in your home, you may have a gas leak. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones or cellphones. Get everyone away from the home or area where you suspect gas is leaking. If you can do it safely, close or shut off the main gas supply valve by turning it to the right. Call your local MFA Oil office immediately from a safe place to report the leak. If you cannot reach MFA Oil, call 911. Do not return to the area until MFA Oil, an emergency responder or a qualified service technician gives the OK.

Never Use Outdoor Propane Appliances for Indoor Heat

Only use appliances indoors that are designed and approved for indoor use. Never store, place or use a propane cylinder indoors or in enclosed spaces.

Keep Your Tank Accessible

It’s important to maintain access to your propane tank so it can be filled quickly and safely. Consider placing a brightly colored flag or pole next to your tank or underground tank access point so it can be easily found in deep snow. When clearing snow and ice from the tank, use a broom or your hands to prevent damage to your propane system. Keeping your driveway clear and maintaining a path to your tank will help your driver reach your tank faster.

Following these winter propane safety tips will help to ensure your family and your property are prepared for whatever the winter brings.
