North Dakota oil output trends downward

September 25, 2025

The inventory report for propane showed supplies went up 987,000 barrels less than expected and total stocks are now at 99.918 million barrels. Last year the inventory was at 97.560 and the 5-year average was 90.712.

The Midwest supplies were up 749,000 barrels, putting total Midwest stocks at 26.804 and last year they were 27.537 and the 5-year average was 26.228.

Gulf Coast supplies were up 887,000, putting total Gulf Coast supplies at 59.949 million and last year they were 56.250 and the five-year average was 50.326. Propane supplies in all markets are in good shape. The new ready-to-use category was down 217,000, putting total supplies of ready-to-use propane at 61.54 million, less than last year when supplies were 68.7 but still in very good shape.

The DOE inventory report had crude oil supplies down 610,000 barrels to a total of 414.754 and last year there were 413.042 and the three-year average is 419.963.

Gasoline inventories were down 610,000 barrels, putting total stocks at 216.569 and last year they were 220.083 and the three-year average is 217.591.

Distillates supplies were down 1.69 million barrels, putting total stocks at 122.999 and last year they were 122.921 and the three-year average is 119.115.

From John Kemp. North Dakota’s oil output is trending down as producers respond to lower prices by scaling back drilling and well completion, according to the latest data from the federal government and state agencies. The state is still the third-highest producer in the country, after Texas and New Mexico, but output is being squeezed by higher costs and lower prices because of less favorable geology and greater distance to export hubs.

Russia is banning diesel exports for resellers of the fuel until the end of the year, and they are extending a gasoline export ban that went into effect in September for both producers and resellers through the end of the year. Russia is doing this to keep domestic stockpiles from falling too low amid lower refinery runs as a result of Ukraine’s ramp up in drone attacks on Russian refineries.
