What to Do If You Have a Propane Leak

Propane is a safe and reliable fuel, but like many other fuels, it is highly flammable. That means it can be dangerous if not handled properly. To protect you, your family and others, you must be aware of – and respect – the normal, everyday hazards around you. Propane is no exception.
How will you know if you have a propane leak?
Propane has a pungent, unpleasant odor that may smell like rotten eggs, a skunk’s spray, or a dead animal. The smell is added to help you notice if your propane system is leaking. If you smell any of these odors in your home, you may have a propane gas leak.
You may also want to consider installing UL-listed propane gas detectors and CO detectors in your home. These detectors provide you with an additional measure of security. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance.
What should you do when you suspect a propane gas leak?
- Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames.
- Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones or cellphones.
- Get everyone away from the home or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
- If you can do it safely, close or shut off the main gas supply valve by turning it to the right.
- Call your local MFA Oil office immediately from a safe place to report the leak. If you cannot reach MFA Oil, call 911.
- Do not return to the area until MFA Oil, an emergency responder or a qualified service technician tells you it is safe to return.
